The three things working mothers need

I, like many mums, often get asked – how do you do it?  How do you work full time, have two kids, manage your household and not go totally insane?  But like all mums, we just do it.

However for me, I find there are three things I need to get my life in working order.


I have chosen to work with organisations who, over the years have provided me with flexibility.  This has come in many forms such as shorter days to do school pick up, working from home days, the opportunity to go up and down in my working days (part-time/full-time).  This flexibility, which has been offered over my past two employees has helped me in many ways.  I cannot express enough that the working from home days really are a life saver in my life at the moment!

More Time

Everyone needs more time, but as working mums even an extra hour a day makes a huge different.  However we all only have 24 hours a day so how do we get more time?  My first tip is to use your time wisely – read my previous post here about my daily commute.  But also you need to look at what you can outsource.  Perhaps you can get a cleaner?  They start at around $30 per hour, this could save you 1-2 hours per week.  Instead of going to the grocery shops, do your shopping online and get it delivered – saving another 1-2 hours per week. For me we use after school care and child care so this assists us, giving us an extra pair of hands at the end of each day.  Have a look at what you do and what you could potentially stop doing to make your life a little easier.

Something for you

This working mum life can just be a merry-go-round with each day/hour being exactly like the last.  Groundhog day, just going through the motions.  it is so important to take something for you. This makes you feel normal, it makes you feel like you are you and not some type of robot!  This is different for everyone.  Perhaps it is curling up with a good book at the end of the day, maybe a spot of shopping during your lunch hour or even a morning gym session.  Whatever it is, make it part of your regular routine.

There are many more things that help my working mother life, but these are just a few to get you thinking.  Also, don’t be afraid to change things up – a change is as good as a holiday!
